Its colonial buildings, year round gardens in bloom and beautiful campo all inspire the work of Jeff Ferst. The sunrise and sunsets over the Presa and the city are spectacular. Every time I walk down the hill from my house to the historic centre of town I am blown away. Each step brings a new view that stirs in my soul. I also love to paint my beautiful garden and the flowers therein. This painting is of the setting sun over the lake and just beyond the houses of Los Frailes. Whimsical and colorful. Edges of canvas have been painted black and painting is wired for hanging." About the Artist: Jeff is a colorist, an abstractionist and most of all a storyteller. Over the years, since early childhood, he has created art. In his youth in the Bronx drawing was his thing. In his early years at NYU Jeff was a print maker and created vibrant serigraph prints and etchings. He also was enamored with the tactile arts - ceramics and sculpture. He was lucky starting off to get representation at a Greenwich Village gallery – the 8th Street Gallery when he was 19. Then as a young adult Jeff discovered Canada, moved to Toronto and found his stride as a painter. Still true to his colourist roots painting still life and landscapes of the Canadian countryside. Galleries liked the work and began to represent him. As Jeff grew as a painter he began to play with texture. He also began to explore abstractions. The abstractions were at first fluid geometrics which were a play of color, form & texture. At the same time he was continuing his landscape paintings to meet the demand of his gallery affiliates. Then he fell in love with Tucson and the Sonoran desert. Moving there in 2012 changed his life. After moving there the work changed. Jeff's love of the desert came out in his work. Vibrant sunsets of intense colour became the focus to satisfy those who followed his landscapes and his abstractions became stories of life in the desert. These deconstructed landscapes if you will are vibrant paintings rich in symbol and emotion. Then in 2019 he moved to Mexico - San Miguel de Allende. Like Tucson it is the high desert, but it is more temperate and offers a better quality of life and freedom for his family and work. Here he paints glorious colorful stories of life in this colonial city. Jeff also paints nature - his garden and the abundant flora and fauna of the area. Recently he joined up with a cooperative gallery in SMA called Galeria Izamal. Throughout his career he has participated in a variety of known shows like Red Dot Miami, Scope Hamptons, Art Expo, etc, and has had relationships with galleries here in the US and Canada. He also has been a supporter of the US State Dept Art in Embassy program and has had more work exhibited globally including alongside Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Robert Indiana. In fact in the exhibition catalog his work "Fantasia" was singled out for being the "flagship piece of the exhibit." Jeff has also had the good fortune to have various publications cover his work calling his paintings “flamboyant,” “juicy,” and “full of life”. These days he can be found in his studio painting or doing a new mosaic piece. He picked up mosaics a few years ago and likes to do them in between his regular schedule of paintings. Mosaics really embodies a culmination of his experiences in the art world over his lifetime. It represents not just a creative way for Jeff to express himself but it also allows him the opportunity to make art more accessible by offering his art on a variety of surfaces and opens up new doors to where the art can be placed. Throughout his career Jeff has always gravitated toward positivity and I guess using colour the way he does is his way of expressing that positivity. This use of colour and the joy that emanates from his paintings is why his work is collected around the world.

In his luminescent multi-paneled oil paintings Freed tries to find the gray area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. Artist Statement For nearly twenty years, I made non-objective grid structured paintings. I started to see references to landscape in these works. I've literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels. Usually one panel is landscape imagery. The adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes. I try to capture the mystical light found in natural atmospheric effects: the haze in the distance on humid summer days, the overcast gloom of winter skies, and the softness of landscape bathed in fog, and the quieting mood of approaching darkness. My intent is to create paintings imbued with a meditative, spiritual presence suggesting issues about time and ecology. I do this by softly modulating color, tone and value. The color varies from quiet, monochromatic works to fully orchestrated chromatic ones. By blending from one hue to another I create color which makes its self gradually felt, weeping forth. In this manner, I create illusions of mysterious emanations of light, places where ones eyes and spirit are invited to linger. I try to imbue my work with a monumental presence, epic in both size and scope. I do this by orchestrating the separate elements of color, texture and structure into a harmonious whole. I seek a somewhat reductive image rich in value and contrast. The surface of the work is devoid of textural incidence. I don’t want anything to distract from the illusion of depth so I deny any marks which would hold the viewer on the surface of the painting. In my luminescent multi- paneled oil paintings I try to find the grey area between traditional landscape painting and its abstraction into color fields. The compositions are about ambiguities of form and void, foreground and background and surface and deep space. My roots lie in tonalism, color field painting and minimalism. However, my work contains an ever-present awareness of the dramatic use of light of the post-renaissance chiaroscurists. It combines a classical awareness of structure with a romantic use of color always in combination with a unique sense of ambiguity. My work continues in its evolution of style the search for an abstract means of probing the ambiguities of physical and spiritual experience of light, and its power to foster a more intense life of the spirit through profound emotional experience of form, color and composition.
